Supporting Disabled ex Forces Peterborough
When RAF and Army veteran Stuart Perridge was looking online for accessible activities and sports to get involved in, little did he realise how quickly his life was going to change.
”I was desperate to find a local sports club that understood the needs of people like me. I searched for local disabled sport and Inspire Peterborough appeared. Within days I was meeting up with Nikki Griffiths from Inspire, Bryan Tyler from the Disability Forum and Cllr John Fox from the Armed Forces committee. I learned so much in that two hour meeting. I’m now part of the committee, I’m helping with some of the work done by the Disability Forum, I have become a sledge hockey fanatic and training with the Peterborough Phantoms, I’m thinking about taking some of the courses Bryan is setting up with City College and the guys have asked me to be the official Ambassador for the Supporting Disabled Ex Forces group.
Councillor Fox, who was a serving Royal Navy technician, said “We came up with the idea for Supporting Disabled Ex Forces after meeting Stuart. Here was a local guy, who had served his country, injured in the service of his country but struggled to know where to turn for a little bit of help. Supporting Disabled Ex Forces will fit perfectly with the aims of the Armed Forces committee in Peterborough, but with an emphasis on helping those with disabilities or long term health conditions. We have the contacts to signpost disabled ex forces personnel on to sport and health and wellbeing providers as well as employers or education and training organisations. We know there are lots of Stuarts out there, we want to do what we can to help those that would like a bit of support”
Stuart concluded “We have some fantastic aims and objectives for the group but one of my own is to get as many ex-service personnel taking part in sport and who knows, trying out for the Invictus games and perhaps even the Olympics in 2020!”
